New gTLD applications have been leaked

Today, ICANN Technical Director Akram Atallah said that an error was found in the registration and dispatch system for new gTLDs (TAS), which resulted in a leak of information on applications for new domains.

Several applicants who, for understandable reasons, did not wish to disclose their names, noticed that when sending applications, files of other applicants were automatically attached to their applications. In this case, the file name included the user name and the domain name for which they applied.

They immediately informed ICANN about the detected error, but no one will say how long this bug exists and how much information has already managed to “leak out”.

The data about the applicants and their applications can now be used by competitors who will certainly try to seize the domains of their opponents by submitting their own application. In this case, the costs of applicants will increase dramatically, since the fate of the new domain will be decided at auction.

If it turns out that a company has taken advantage of a bug to fight competitors, ICANN will be in trouble.

As we already wrote, ICANN disconnected TAS until April 17 . Until that time, it is planned to strengthen the protection of the domain registration system. The last day to apply for a new domain will be April 20th.
