Currently, the screens of portable devices use two main visualization technologies for reading: LCD and E-Ink. Each of them has both advantages and disadvantages. LCD provides interactivity that is unattainable for E-Ink and the ability to read in dim light, while E-Ink is strong on a sunny day at the beach and boasts long work without recharging. Barnes & Noble company launches a product that removes one of the main drawbacks of E-Ink - the inconvenience of reading with poor lighting.
All previous attempts to simplify the night reading on the E-Ink were limited to the use of external flashlights. In the most advanced versions, the flashlight was embedded in the cover for the reader. Barnes & Noble, on the other hand, offers a completely different approach, called GlowLight ™. At the core of this approach is an additional transparent layer that diffuses the light from the white LEDs hidden behind the edge of the screen, which gives a smoother and softer backlighting of the entire page. The manufacturer claims that the new reader is able to provide a month of reading with the backlight turned on on one battery charge. The truth clarifies that this result can be achieved by reading no more than half an hour daily.
