Programmer from Germany condemned for 3 years and 10 months
Today, the Land Court of Leipzig sentenced the 29-year-old programmer of the portal kino.to to 3 years and 10 months in prison for a massive copyright infringement. The deadline was reduced because the programmer collaborated with the police. Four have already been convicted, 8 more people involved in the site are awaiting a court decision, all of them face up to 5 years in prison. In total, 13 of the 26 members of the site team were arrested. Kino.to was a collection of links to downloads and online movies and TV series. It was the largest pirate site in Germany with attendance of several hundred thousand users per day. About 16% of German Internet users viewed movies on kino.to. The Internet portal was closed last year. Police counted 1.110.543 copyright infringements. Accounts of 2.5 million euros were blocked. The prosecutor called the accused “the spiritual father, the Creator and the architect of what we know as kino.to” and “God in programming”. The lawyer insisted that the defendant was just a “machinist”. The accused programmer received a third of advertising revenue, which was about 50,000 euros per month.
Now the portal works under the domain kinox.to . The site began working with the appeal: “Dear GVU (comment - Copyright Society), film industry and the state: Do you really think that you can stop us just because you have tons of money? How can it be that innocent website administrators are on par with killers and rapists, ”the message ends with the phrase:“ Legends can sleep, but they will never die . ”
