Wolfram Alpha is now analyzing literary works.

Wolfram Alpha's search and analysis service continues to delight with new features. In general, service developers do not sleep, and try every month to present something new. Then they add the function of tracking aircraft, when you can find out in a couple of clicks what aircraft flew overhead, which airline it belongs to, and how many passengers are there. Now this search engine has learned to analyze literary works (so far only English-speaking). But not as a literary critic, but as an “employee” of the statistics department.

So, Wolfram Alpha can now determine, at the user's request, such characteristics of a well-known literary work as the total number of words (with the display of the time for which this work can be read), the total number of unique words, the total number of unique word bases, the average number of characters in a word and the longest words. There are other characteristics of literary text that Wolfram Alpha can show for you.

You can get the necessary data not only by entering the name of the work (English language) in the search box. You can also type in queries (yes, again in English) like “the longest words in Romeo and Juliet”.

Probably, such information is not needed by a very large number of people, because who among us will be engaged in the statistical analysis of “War and Peace”, for example? But some experts still need such data. Well, and all the rest can just play with the new function - suddenly you will be able to find something useful for yourself? In any case, I would be interested to know how many words are in the most favorite works.

So far, not many literary works are available that Wolfram Alpha can analyze. But the developers, in their own words, are constantly working to ensure that such works become more and more.
