Yandex launched a search for CERN

Yandex has joined the work of the European Center for Nuclear Research (CERN). Especially for scientists who conduct experiments at the Large Hadron Collider, Yandex has developed a search service. It will be used in one of the four major experiments of CERN - Large Hadron Collider beauty experiment (LHCb).

LHCb is an experiment to study particles containing a b-quark (the so-called “pretty” quark, from ang. "Beauty"). In the course of the experiment, the particles collide and scatter in different directions. Collision data (or “events”) are recorded for further investigation. The amount of information accumulated in just one year can amount to thousands of terabytes, and it is rather difficult to navigate in such a data array. For convenient work with them, Yandex created a search index and launched a search for events. Now physicists can instantly get the information they need. Now in the search service index for more than a billion events.

“We are very pleased to cooperate with the Center for Nuclear Research, because we are interested in applying our technologies in various fields. In addition, it is nice to do something useful for physicists and for science. We will continue to develop the service developed for LHCb and, possibly, we will connect to other CERN experiments, ”said Ilya Segalovich, director of technology at Yandex.

“Our specialists appreciated the service offered by Yandex. The LHCb experiment data includes several billions of events that are usually analyzed sequentially. Finding an event that meets certain criteria can take several hours and requires significant computational power. The Yandex service, designed specifically for our needs, allows us to find the necessary information in a second, saving time and effort, ”said Pierluigi Campana, head of the LHCb experiment.

The cooperation between Yandex and CERN began in 2011, when Yandex provided CERN with its servers. In the first quarter of 2012, Yandex’s computing resources accounted for 13% of the amount of computing power used in the LHCb experiment.
