Viktor Vekselberg gave $ 9 million to create an equivalent Mail.Ru

Renova-Media holding , which is the owner of several companies, including the Russian operator Komkor-TV and the Belarusian Kosmos-TV, announced that it will enter a new media market. According to Kommersant , the company decided to invest $ 9 million in the creation of a “portal that resembles Mail.Ru”. There will be news, postal service, dating service, etc. Initially, the main audience of the portal will be Komkor-TV and Kosmos-TV subscribers in Moscow, Minsk, St. Petersburg, Yekatingburg and other cities where Renova Internet service providers operate.

“These will be urban media, but first of all we need the portal to promote services, attract subscribers and increase their loyalty,” said Victor Savyuk, President of Renova Media.

The web portal will be officially launched at the end of this year, although the domain name and the name for it have not yet been invented. By the end of 2008, the project should reach the level of 2.3-2.5 million visits per month. The payback period is one and a half years. The portal will earn on advertising and paid services (downloading music and video, etc.). About 150 specialists are planned to be involved in the work on the project.

The idea of creating a universal portal not only for existing subscribers, but also for attracting new ones is rather unusual. Until now, the Russian Internet providers created only specialized specialized sites. For example, in 2005, Corbina-Telecom launched a similar media project, Corbina.tv, and this year an additional $ 1 million was invested in it. According to the vice-president of Corbina, only 22% of visitors to this site give has already become the leader of the Runet ratings in the "Television" category.

In May of this year, Comstar-Direct (“Stream”) announced the creation of its own media portal with a music store. The declared cost of the project is $ 3 million.

However, in terms of the budget of Renova, there is a clear leader here: nine million for Runet is serious money. It is known that Renova-Media holding is controlled by oligarch Viktor Vekselberg, one of the richest people in Russia, whose personal fortune is estimated at about $ 10 billion.
