Due to the strange distortion of copyright conditions, three times more books written in 1850 than in 1950 are on sale now.
New books on sale on Amazon, on decades
The diagram shows the distribution of the first publication date for 2500 randomly selected new art books at Amazon.
According to experts, the reason for this is a sharp tightening of copyright in 1923. Thus, works until 1923 are now in the public domain and are more often printed.
The diagram was published in his copyright lecture by Professor Paul Heald, who teaches law at the University of Illinois. The data is collected by a program written by one of his students. The professor personally checked the date of the first publication of each book in the Library of Congress, since this information is not shown in the Amazon output.
