Applicants for new gTLDs will compete in “digital shooting”

As we wrote, ICANN can consider no more than 500 applications for one period of accepting applications for new gTLDs. If there are more of them, then all applications will be divided into groups, and each group of applications will be considered in turn. Until recently, the principle of distribution of applications was unknown, which caused concern for many companies, for which it is important that their domain be registered and delegated as quickly as possible, while the new domains have not yet become boring.

Only yesterday, the ICANN Board of Directors approved the application distribution system, the official name of which is digital archery.

Applicants for new domains will be asked to choose the time at which they will apply. Then they are required to go to the application submission page and press the “send” button as close as possible to their chosen time. Applicants who sent the application closest to the specified time, fall into the first group.

Applicants can choose the earliest time, if they want to get into the first group, or more later, if the time for them does not matter.

With such a system, residents of those regions that have the best connection to the ICANN site benefit. ICANN will partially solve this problem, if possible by equalizing the number of applicants from different regions in the first round of applications.

Also some advantage will be gained by experienced domainers who can “catch” the released domain names in seconds. But, most likely, good ping and the use of special programs to send an application at the right time will be the key to success - after all, there are no “captcha” and other obstacles on their application on the ICANN website.

Of course, not everyone is satisfied with such a system, because the fate of many applications will depend only on luck and the quality of communication with the ICANN website. But other options, such as auctioning or manually distributing to groups according to one or another principle, also have many drawbacks.

Recall that ICANN reported on 839 registered applicants for new domains, most of which will file several applications.
