Wikidata: the first new project of the Wikimedia Foundation since 2006

The Wikimedia Foundation is about to launch the Wikidata site, “an open knowledge base about the world that both people and machines can read and edit.” The project will be conducted in all languages available in Wikimedia, and it should become some kind of central and unified data storage for all Wikimedia projects, just like the Wikimedia Commons is the central storage of multimedia files for all other projects.

The main essence of Wikidata is to provide computer programs with structured information. There must be some kind of uniform format and a common way for all computers, how to extract knowledge about the world, whether it is information about time zones, coordinates of cities in the world, or birthdays of actors. All these data should be available to computers through a single interface.

The initial launch of Wikidata was made possible through targeted donations from the Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence, the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation and Google.

Wikidata is not the first attempt to structure the data in Wikimedia, such projects have been attempted to be launched before , but without success. The same can be said about trying to turn the entire Internet into a Semantic network, understandable for computers. Since this was not possible, you can at least make a prototype of the Semantic network within the framework of a single Wikidata site.

Recently, universal data analysis systems like the Wolfram Alpha began to work with might and main, so that the demand for the knowledge base accessible via the machine interface has become even greater.

It should be added that some projects are already trying to pull out data from Wikipedia and publish it in a structured way: for example, Freebase and DBpedia . This again speaks of the relevance of the Wikidata project, which will become a kind of canonical version of the knowledge base, which will also inform the source of information for each fact.
