OpenStreetMap News No. 16: a new license and data deletion, OSM is now on site No. 1 in Japan and in the PROGOROD, on-demand map to search for the missing child
It is a day of great change . On March 31, the last dump under the CC license will be released, after which the move to the new server will begin and the ability to edit the card will be completely closed. March 4 will begin the merciless destruction of data (for example, 32,000 roads will be deleted in Russia), the authors of which did not give permission for their distribution under a new license (but it is not too late to do so). The map will be in a fever, the borders of the states and entire cities will probably disappear, which will have to be redrawn. Due to the deletion of data from OSM, the fosm.org project becomes the largest free map of the world - a fork under the old license, from which no one will delete data. OSM plans to finish the cleanup process on April 9, and then announce the new license and launch the generation of dumps.
An employee of Yandex told ( from 1:58 ) that they did not consider OSM as an alternative to NUC. He said that the guys from OSM make excellent maps for themselves and for use in navigators and as an alternative to NUC this doesn’t fit. “We have a completely different game.” It was also said that commercial companies are unlikely to use OSM.
OSMery draw a map of Vytegra (Vologda region) to help the movement that is looking for the missing child of 5 years.
The president of Esri, Jack Dengermond, confirmed his intention to make the cards accessible to everyone by making a donation to the OpenStreetMap Foundation.
