Microsoft requires manufacturers to take seriously the quality of touch panels for Windows 8

If a company from Cupertino keeps any information about its devices in the strictest secrecy, allowing journalists to guess and dream, Microsoft, on the contrary, is not averse to opening the details of the internal kitchen of working on their projects, unobtrusively letting future users know how serious the company is and what they will have to rely on in the future.

Steven Sinofsky, president of Microsoft’s Windows division at Microsoft, published a blog yesterday, with the main idea as follows: Microsoft is thorough in its approach to the implementation of the touch capabilities of the future Windows 8, and therefore its requirements for touchscreen manufacturers are very high.

Sinofsky, in principle, agrees that basic gestures when working with the operating system require two fingers, however, due to the intuitiveness of the Windows 8 interface, there is no point in depriving users of the ability to control their device as they please. Therefore, Microsoft requires panel manufacturers to support recognition of at least five touches to the screen and even “multi-hand” scripts for working with the system.

In particular, Sinofsky says that modern touch panels have a problem of reducing the sensitivity of the screen closer to its edge, which manufacturers prefer not to extend, and because of which users may have difficulty working with some elements of Windows 8, scrolling through Metro elements and desktop. So “edge swipe” is very often used when working in the system, and the loss of sensitivity at the edge of the screen is critical, since literally every pixel is used for gesture recognition. That's it for such reasons, the requirements for sensors in future devices with a new system are very significant.

In the video below, we are talking about managing Windows 8 using gestures in the way that the company itself sees.
