LG launches flexible displays

South Korean company LG Electronics announced the start of mass production of flexible screens for electronic books. Unlike most modern e-ink displays, the new product will not use a glass, but a plastic substrate similar to a “protective film” for cell phone screens.

Plastic screens will be flexible, thinner and more durable than their glass counterparts. The LG emphasizes that the new display has stood the test of strength, fully retaining performance when falling from a half meter height.

The screen diagonal will be 6 inches, and the resolution - 1024 by 768 pixels. It will be one third thinner than e-ink glass screens and twice as light (14 grams). LG will supply screens to electronics manufacturers in China. Shipment of ready-made "readers" with flexible screens to Europe starts in early April.
