New universal format flash cards in 2009?

Several manufacturers of flash memory cards (Micron Technology, Nokia, Samsung Electronics, Sony Ericsson, Spansion, STMicroelectronics and Texas Instruments) announced the start of work on creating an industry specification for removable memory cards and embedded memory. The standardization of the new specification, called Universal Flash Storage (UFS), will be the responsibility of the JEDEC Solid State Technology Association (JEDEC), which develops open standards for the semiconductor industry.

The idea of manufacturing companies is quite understandable and should be welcomed by all (consumers in the first place). It would be time already! Since the universal solution will be much more convenient than using several non-compatible formats at once. In addition, the new format itself is said to provide a revolutionary breakthrough in reducing access time, increasing the speed of transferring large files and reducing the power consumption of consumer electronics devices. As an example: at the moment it takes three minutes to transfer a 90-minute high-resolution video (4 GB); The new standard will reduce this time to a few seconds.

According to representatives of companies and organizations involved in the development and standardization process, the final version of the UFS standard should be published in 2009. So the appearance of universal flash drives can be expected in two or three years.
