ICANN is required to ban registration of gTLDs with names of organs and diseases

Today, the US National Health Council (National Health Council, NHC) sent a letter to ICANN with a request to ban the registration of new top-level domains with the names of organs of the human body, as well as various diseases. NHC is an influential association, which leads many major medical and pharmaceutical organizations.

NHC President Myrle Weinberg said that registering gTLDs with the names of organs and diseases and information posted on sites related to these gTLDs might mislead patients, which will cause irreparable harm to their health.

Since the names of organs and diseases cannot be registered as a trademark, Weinberg appealed to ICANN to ban the registration of such domain names.

NHC will probably fight for domains such as .diabetes, .cancer, and other potentially valuable names in order to expand the scope of activity of the members of the association.
