Part 1. Global Shutdown Operation

On the eve of April Fool's Day (April 1), when there seemed to be no signs of trouble, world news sounded the alarm of a global scale.

The hacktivists of the Anonymous movement within the Global Shutdown campaign promise on March 31 to launch a distributed attack on 13 root DNS servers, which will lead to the fact that the ability to search for domain names on the Internet throughout the world will be lost.

" In protest against SOPA, Wall Street, our irresponsible leaders and favorite bankers who make the world go hungry because of their selfish needs, and for the sake of simple sadistic fun, Anonymous will turn off the Internet on March 31, " the statement said. .

Leading security specialist for World of Communications , Yevgeny Gordeyev, commented on the news:

“The whole question is that this is not one machine that can be disabled. The published list is root servers. They are managed by many organizations. ICANN handles domain name and IP address issues. And not all mirrors lead to root services (only from 18 to 32%, the rest of the queries use cached DNS records about the TLD NS).

Now over these 13 names are more than 200 servers. Servers are physically distributed at different points, and in principle they may not have a center. It is unlikely to push several systems at the same time to reach the root server.

It is impossible to attribute anything to an organization like Anonymous. Anonymous is nobody and all together. Those. I think for such a global action, resources will be involved not only directly to this organization, but also many users who simply want to do something significant in their lives. Do not create, so destroy. (In their publication, activists also posted links to software with which users can take part in the operation).

Oddly enough, such phenomena are very useful in terms of the development of Internet technologies. Until the crisis happens, we all feel safe. Hacker attacks reveal security weaknesses. And while they are not indicated, the developers will close their eyes to this. So if Anonymous does turn off the Internet, we find out that the existing algorithms are not perfect enough. So, it is required to make a breakthrough in this area. ”
