Animated site icons, only Firefox?

Is there something wrong with the code? <link href="ico.gif" TYPE="image/gif" REL="icon"> or only the Mozilla engine displays animated gif as site favicons?

Tested in Internet Explorer 7, Firefox 2.0.0.6, Opera 9.23, Opera 9.5 Alpha, Safari 3.0.3 Beta, and only in Firefox the favicons element was displayed .

And by the way on w3.org the standard says:

This document doesn’t need to be discussed. However, it’s 16x16 pixels or 32x32 pixels, either using 8-bit or 24-bit colors. The one of PNG (a W3C standard), GIF, or ICO.

On the other hand it says "The format of the image ...", not a word animated
