When in my childhood I had to combine several parts from different designers, I usually had to use clay. Not the most convenient thing, but nothing better was found - the real “adult” tools were too big, heavy and inaccessible, and what is scotch, in the 80s only a select few knew. Modern children are much more fortunate.
FAT Lab together with
Sy-Lab created a set of high-quality 3D-models of connectors, with which you can connect the details of ten popular children's designers - the
Free Universal Construction Kit .
An
optical comparator with a resolution of about 2.5 microns was used to measure the dimensions of the parts of branded designers. For comparison - Lego parts
have tolerances of 10 microns . Thus, the accuracy of the models is sufficient to ensure the quality of connections at the level of factory parts. Unfortunately, the resolution of inexpensive 3D printers, such as the
Makerbot , is by an order of magnitude smaller. However, this does not mean that the connectors will not work at all - in the worst case, they should cope at the level of cheap Chinese fakes (and immeasurably better than clay). A trial set of parts was printed using an
Eden500V printer with a horizontal resolution of 42 microns - normal flight.
The creators of the set believe that the use of their models does not violate any laws on intellectual property and patents, if you print out the details of the set for personal use only. It is not yet known what manufacturers of designers think about it. However, it seems that they have almost no freedom of maneuver. It is difficult to imagine what damage to the reputation of a company that wants to "take the candy from the child." Especially since the genie has already been released from the bottle and any attempt to stop the distribution of the set will only stir up interest in him (it suffices to recall the story from
09 F9 ).

a section devoted to models for 3D printers has recently been
opened .
