On March 13, 2012 at the ISOC meeting at the 43rd ICANN convention in Costa Rica, representatives of Russia, Director of Webnames.ru Sergey Sharikov and President of the Internet Technology and Infrastructure Development Foundation Alexander Panov, with applause from the audience, handed the ISOC Director Teda Muni a request for the creation of the Russian branch of the Internet Community (ISOC Russia Chapter) within the Internet Society (ISOC.ORG).
The initiative to create the Russian branch of ISOC was proposed by Sergey Sharikov and Alexey Sozonov a few months ago and received the support of well-known Internet figures of Russia. Director of ROSNIIROS Alexey Platonov and Vice-Rector of Moscow State University Alexey Soldatov, Director of the KC National Domain RU Andre Kolesnikov and Chairman of the Council KC Marina Nikerova, RIPE Board Member Dmitry Burkov and RAEC Director Sergey Plugotarenko, Mail.ru Vice President Mikhail Yakushev and Chief Editor of PC Magazine / RE Oleg Lebedev supported the initiative and became one of the founders of the ISOC Russia Chapter.
The Russian branch of ISOC, involving in its activities individuals who want to influence the future of the Internet, companies, government agencies and funds involved in the development of the Internet and its technologies, will strive to achieve the following goals:

Development, maintenance, development and dissemination of standards for the Internet and its internetwork technologies and applications.
Growth and development of Internet architecture.
Maintenance and development of effective management processes necessary for the functioning of the global Internet.
Internet-related education and research.
Assisting developing regions in the implementation and development of Internet infrastructure and its use.
Development of the Russian-language Internet addressing system, support for new Cyrillic root domains.
Harmonization of actions and activities at the international level to facilitate the development and accessibility of the Internet.
