Recently, NEC Corp has introduced a new type of battery. This is no longer a concept, but quite a working battery, the capacity of which, however, is very small. The photo clearly shows how thin the battery is. This type of battery is called ORB (Organic Radical Battery). Next year NEC Corp is going to launch its production in mass production.
This project began to be developed by the company several years ago, in 2005. At the very beginning it was planned that batteries of this type will be used in electronic "readers" with e-paper displays. A little later, the concept was finalized, and the company decided to try to apply the battery to other devices. The thickness of the battery, by the way, is only 0.3 mm. True, the battery can only give 3 mAh, which is very little. But this capacity is enough to “scroll through” 2 thousand pages on the e-paper display.

By the way, no heavy metals are used here, instead, the developers use the reaction of salts in a polymer gel. In this case, the number of charge / discharge cycles is comparable to conventional Li-ion batteries. Of course, the use of such batteries to ensure the operation of conventional devices and speech is not. But ORB will be used in e-books, in conjunction with bank cards, perhaps in tablets and laptops, as an auxiliary battery for some purposes.
In principle, different companies have long been engaged in the development of flexible "electronic newspapers". It may well be that such a thin and flexible battery can give a new impetus to the development of such projects.
