March 28 is declared the day of free document circulation

The European Free Software Foundation ( FSFE ) announced March 28 as the day of free circulation of documents. This refers to the need to support open and free document formats, as well as an explanation of their advantages.

At the moment there is only one completely free popular document format - Open Document Format . Microsoft’s parallel open file format - Office Open XML is not completely free, as Microsoft owns a number of patents in this format that are not covered by an open license, so its use in software can cause some pitfalls in the legal field.

Currently, open office suites like Apache OpenOffice.org , LibreOffice and Calligra Office are working with ODF. On mobile devices, things are much worse with open source software, unfortunately: there are a number of OpenOffice.org ports on Maemo, significantly cut Calligra on MeeGo, as well as a simple document viewer for Android , and work is being done on porting Calligra Suite to Android Ice Cream Sandwich, and The Document Foundation plans to develop an Android version of the software, at the moment LibreOffice has a working prototype. It is also worth noting that ODF is the standard for document circulation in the organization of the North Atlantic Alliance (NATO) and Russia, as well as a number of other states and organizations.

FSFE understands the support of the format as follows: promoting the format in social networks, placing special or customized banners on their websites, holding special seminars and distributing flyers / booklets in universities (in Russia, similar events are already planned in Saratov and Omsk ), libraries and reading rooms, where the advantages of using free software for editing documents, as well as the use of free formats for saving, would be explained.
It is clear that at the moment all the packages of free office software are somehow inferior to a number of Microsoft Office parameters, but there are no obvious restrictions for using these packages in the field of school education, university education (especially humanitarian faculties), so try to convey such information to familiar teachers of computer science.
So do not forget to mark March 28 on your calendar and post information in social networks with the hashtag #dfd.
