IBM Holey Optochip optical chip can download 5 movies per second
IBM engineers presented their prototype Holey Optochip optical chip at the OFC / NFOEC annual conference in Los Angeles, which is capable of transmitting one terabit of data per second.
The ultra-fast Holey Optochip is a conventional quarter-inch silicon CMOS chip. In terms of information transfer per second, the channel is equal to the entire Internet archive of the Library of Congress or 5 films in high quality. ')
According to IBM, the record speed is provided mainly due to the fact that it has 48 tiny holes used as channels for 24 transmitters and 24 receivers. Holey Optochip consumes no more than 5 watts of electricity.
Over the next ten years, IBM plans to work on a commercial version. Holey Optochip plan to install in new generation supercomputers and data centers.
