Toshiba increases hard drive density by 50%

Toshiba has unveiled a prototype 1.8-inch hard disk for the public , allowing 120 GB of data to be recorded on a single plate. This is the first hard drive in the world that supports Discrete Track Recording (DTR), which achieved a recording density of 516 Mbit per square millimeter and increased the total data recording volume per plate by 50%.

At the moment, 1.8-inch discs are available on the market that support the ability to write 80 GB of data per platinum. According to the manufacturer, the new development, the serial production of which will begin in 2009, will be an excellent solution for use in portable devices such as media players, UMPC and ultra portable notebooks.
