SMS transmission service is
very profitable for mobile operators, subscribers pay for this service thousands of times more than the cost. SMS at the usual rate costs from $ 0.01 to $ 0.1, and if the operator transmits these 140 bytes over the Internet, then the average rate is around $ 0.000004 for each message, that is, 2500-25000 times less. This is the price close to the cost.
So there is nothing surprising in the fact that operators with such hostility look at various free messaging services that are becoming more and more popular. This problem has become
one of the main topics for disputes at the World Mobile Congress in Barcelona.
Recently, a number of free text services for mobile phones have appeared: these are Viber, WhatsApp, Apple iMessage, Facebook Messenger, KakaoTalk, not to mention the usual IM clients that release applications for mobile platforms.
According to the analytical company Ovum, last year mobile operators lost almost ÂŁ 9 billion from sending paid SMS due to the activities of such free instant messengers, and in the future their profits will decline even more.

At the World Mobile Congress, the executive director of Telecom Italia, Franco Bernabe, made a speech: he said that free instant messengers are undermining the ability of cellular companies to invest in their networks. Here it is meant that the transfer of SMS is one of the most profitable services, all revenues from it go to the net profit of the operator, which can be directed to investments.
According to analysts, free messaging services, as well as VoIP telephony programs, can completely force cellular operators out of the premium segment, and those will have the only role of “stupid” Internet service providers. Of course, this prospect does not attract such operators at all, and they are trying with all their might to retain the function of “smart” providers, who charge different types of traffic.
Cell phone operators will not give up without a fight. At the congress in Barcelona, GSMA announced a joint project of the largest cellular operators to create a single Rich Communications Suite (RCS) platform for sending text messages over IP. It is proposed to create a new software that will be pre-installed on mobile phones from different operators. The project will launch this year in Spain, France, Germany, Italy and South Korea.
