Microsoft Research. The future is near: interactive desktop, Illumishare and Holoflector

The group of Applied Sciences Team from Microsoft Research presented their new developments.
One of the projects is an interactive desktop.

It is based on Samsung’s transparent OLED monitor, Kinect sensors and, of course, specialized software.

Due to this, it becomes possible to manage objects that are behind a transparent screen.
The key element is Kinect, which monitors the user's eyes and movements, calculating and building the necessary depth of perspective on the screen.

The demo video shows the ability to control windows and work with 3D-models "directly."

Illumishare

IllumiShare allows people to share at a distance any physical or digital object on any surface.

The Illumishare is an inexpensive peripheral that looks like a desk lamp and, like the lamp that illuminates a surface, turns the surface itself into a common work space.
The basis of this development is a bundle of camera and projector, where the camera captures video from one working surface and sends it to another device.

At first glance - a very elegant and simple solution. However, the main technical problem is “video echo”, the elimination of which was done by MSR specialists.

Holoflector

Holoflector is a mirror of augmented reality.

Again, it is based on Kinect. The “display” itself consists of a translucent mirror and an LCD matrix.
Sensors monitor the object itself in front of the mirror, projecting it onto the screen. At the same time, a digital model of the object itself is created / linked.
