Mozillovsky Boot to Gecko (B2G) - a project to build a complete and sufficient (standalone) operating system for an open Web. Its goal is to make web technologies the first choice for applications on desktops and mobile phones; and we believe that B2G will be able to replace the proprietary, only application-supplied kits for developing applications. On this way, we have achieved some success and want to share them with you!
Project Boot to Gecko
To begin with, let's take a look at the project components:
Tasks
Boot to Gecko is a Mozilla mobile operating system based on open source web technologies. This is the development environment for the open web hardware platform, as was shown in February 2012 at the Mobile World Congress (Mobile World Congress). ')
Technology
The architecture of Boot to Gecko eliminates the need for applications to be built on top of special, single-platform APIs. Using HTML5, developers everywhere can create stunning applications and user interaction right on the Web that are not burdened by the rules and restrictions of those platforms that are under the control of manufacturers.
Open standards available
As with all Mozilla projects, the source code is open and available, and the project is based entirely on open standards. And where there are no open standards (telephone, SMS, camera, Bluetooth, USB, NFC), Mozilla interacts with standardization committees and with suppliers to create standards. Please read more about this in the Mozilla and the Evolution of the Mobile Web API .
Here are a few interviews (and in them an amazing mix of languages) - this is an interview with the developers of the Boot to Gecko project:
As we announced today at the World Mobile Congress , there is extraordinarily exciting news about the Open Web Devices! We will act together with the telecommunications operator Telefónica, and (as announced in our press release ), the objectives of the collaboration will be as follows:
Hardware support for HTML5 in devices based on the Open Web (Open Web), which will have the capabilities of smartphones (smartphones) and the price of the usual tricked mobile phones (feature phones).
Their interfaces are sent to W3C for standardization and will be openly accessible.
New opportunities for application developers are opening up, the role of HTML5 as a cross-platform standard is growing.
Based on the Qualcomm chipset, Mozilla, Telefónica and Qualcomm will work together to create a platform platform full of capabilities. The browser gets it already 317 points inthe HTML5 test . As for affordability, according to Carlos Domingo from Telefónica, the Boot to Gecko mobiles will be ten times cheaper than iPhones .
Joint venture with Deutsche Telekom
We are also pleased to announce that Deutsche Telecom Innovation Laboratories will join the project and will work together with Mozilla in developing Boot to Gecko.
Boot to Gecko Demo
In this video you can see how Boot to Gecko works. A call to the correspondent, surfing the Web and launching the HTML5 test (in which Mobile Firefox scores more points than any other mobile browser) is shown. Then, a Twitter client, a computer game, a google map, a video on YouTube, a book, and finally a non-online video are shown.
Web is a platform
As we have always believed in Mozille, the Web is a platform, and open technology is a development tool!
