Most recently, Mozilla introduced a prototype of its own mobile operating system, Boot2Gecko. On Habré was
published news about this OS. A few days ago an agreement was announced between Mozilla and Telefonica, which concerns the development of a new OS based on the very Boot2Gecko. The new operating system, as planned, will allow the device with a budget configuration to turn into a fairly sophisticated smartphone. In hardware, such a device will lose to ordinary smartphones, but in terms of functionality it will be close to such devices.
The new operating system will be called Open Web Devices (OWD), and will take most of the work from Boot2Gecko (which in itself is not yet “finished”). It is worth recalling that the main goal of the developers of Boot2Gecko was to create a mobile OS based on Linux, with a certain number of applications needed by the user.

After the announcement of Boot2Gecko, several companies became interested in this development. One of these companies was Telefonica, which had been planning to create its own mobile OS for quite some time. As mentioned above, the new development should turn the usual "dialer" into a kind of smartphone. And such devices will be distributed in countries where ordinary smartphones are not available to residents because of their cost. These may be some of the countries of Latin America.
The project is quite real, and partners are going to develop a device based on OWD by the end of this year. So far, the details of the new development are unknown. It is only known that this OS is developed on the basis of the possibility of hardware from Qualcomm. After the work goes through a certain stage, the OS will be open.
