Search engine YossarianLives searches for metaphors

As a rule, the search on the Internet is aimed at obtaining some factual information - as is done in universal Google or Yandex or in a number of specialized search engines: restaurants, tickets, coupons, torrents, etc.

This year, the company YossarianLives intends to launch a search engine “by metaphor» ( metaphorical search engine ), having behind it as a sponsor of Deutsche Bank and the foundation SeedCamp. It will be difficult to explain how this works, because on the site so far you can only leave your email to receive an invitation. The creators themselves, among whom there are, and, apparently, our compatriot Katia Shutova, 28 years old, will present their project as follows:

We create a search engine that generates metaphors. Modern search engines return you results that closely relate to your query, which can be useful if you are looking for something that the world already knows. But if you are on the frontier of knowledge, it is useless. Then metaphors become really necessary.

says Jay Paul Neeley, CEO of YossarianLives.

How exactly the system works is not disclosed by its creators, although they emphasize that they do not “directly teach” its metaphors by specifying pre-selected correspondences, but use statistical natural-language technique ( statistical natural-language processing techniques ), which is similar to that used in Google. These methods find a correspondence between words, believing such concepts as “dog” and “bone” to be close, while YossarianLives considers close not only them, but “dog” and “ironing board” ( ironing board ). In other words, the system finds concepts that are far from each other in some properties, but there is still something conceptually common between them.

Phil Blunsom, a researcher in the field of mathematical linguistics from Oxford, who evaluated the idea of a search engine at the request of NewScientist observers, expressed skepticism: “Defining metaphors is a very difficult task in itself ... and finding correspondences is a very difficult task, the accuracy of determination of which looks a little hopeful” . The NewScientist observers themselves expressed a dual opinion: they tested the search engine by typing the word “science” and received as a result a photo of a happy couple, which should signify the concept of “chemistry” (in the sense, “chemistry” of love, the beginning of relationships, oxytocin emissions, etc.) P. ). Immediately the thought arose that the concepts were chosen just by chance, which almost always looks like a paradoxical and vivid manifestation of creativity, under which, in fact, the search engine is “sharpened”, but, nevertheless, Neely rejected this assumption.

It remains to be noted that the unusual search engine was named after the protagonist of the novel by American writer Joseph Heller “The Trick-22” by Captain Yossarian.
