Google, Microsoft and Netflix want to add DRM to HTML5

A few weeks ago, the W3C submitted a draft proposal for introducing a system of restrictions on the use of video and audio tags in HTML5. The authors of this proposal are David Dorwin from Google, Adrian Bateman from Microsoft and Mark Watson from Netflix.

This proposal is about creating some kind of media extension within HTML5 that will allow an application to control content. Control will be exercised by the so-called “license server” based on the keys received from the application itself. The purpose of such control is of course understandable - copyright protection, which is so desired by many companies. Although the document itself says that this functionality is not an attempt to introduce DRM in HTML5, everything suggests that this is exactly DRM.

However, apparently not everyone in the W3C agrees with the wisdom of such innovations. Most likely, it will take a long time before the final decision is made. We just have to wait and hope for the prudence of the W3C, because we all know very well how well DRM works in the gaming industry today. Is not it, Ubisoft?
