Recovering locally downloaded letters in the mailbox on the server. IMAP

Good day.

Habrapamer ValdikSS in the article "Restoring deleted mail to mail.ru (and others)" shared the option of restoring the mail server already received by the client. I want to share another way of recovery not depending on the client base format.

When does this method work?

Unfortunately, the applicability of this method largely depends on the mail transfer protocols that servers and clients support, namely IMAP4.
')
Some popular IMAP-enabled email clients include:

You can learn about IMAP support for a specific mail server from the corresponding instructions for setting up mail programs. Below are some popular services and links to help pages:

And despite the fact that the required protocol has existed since 1994, its support by some players in this field is perceived as an optional option. An example of this is the mail.ru service, which abandoned IMAP some time ago.

So. If you set up your email client through pop3 and forgetting to tick the checkbox “store mail on the server” decided to restore the letters on the server or you want to replenish the mailbox with any other emails from the accounts in your email client, then welcome under Habrakat.

Brief instruction

Sequentially perform the following actions:
  1. Using your favorite search engine or a search from www.google.com and requests like “gmail.com imap” and “Mozilla Thunderbird imap” we find out how to set up IMAP for your combination of mail service and a client containing unloaded mail. Just do not forget that this information can usually be found in the relevant sections of the help.
  2. Install the previously forgotten checkmark "store mail on the server."
  3. Using the found instructions, we enable, if necessary, IMAP functionality on the server and add an additional profile / mail account in your mail client, but with IMAP settings. Thus, you will have 2 profiles / accounts tied to one service and retrieving mail through various protocols.
  4. We start receiving and sending (alternative name - synchronization) of letters for the added account to get the folder structure on the server.
  5. Using the functionality of the mail client, we transfer letters from the “SMTP” account to the Inbox / Inbox folder in the “IMAP” account.
  6. Restart sync

Summing up

After re-synchronizing the moved emails, you just have to decide which of the two profiles in the email client you want to leave. Episodic use of IMAP, for example, is very convenient for sorting letters into folders in the mailbox to which you mostly access via WEB. Perhaps you also want to just disable the automatic synchronization of this account without removing it from the mail client.

The method itself lies on the surface and is not technically complex, but I think that the post will be useful as a ready-made solution to the problem (idea) and to those who are familiar with these technologies.

Thanks for attention.
