I regularly read reports of various IT publications on the growth of the data center market in Russia, the lack of space and the ambitious prospects of the industry. I do not want categorical statements, but, IMHO, the above is relevant, first of all, for the monsters of the industry. In addition, opinions on the backwardness and high cost of commercial data centers in Russia prevail in the domestic blogosphere. Small and medium businesses do not trust Russian data centers for a number of reasons, many of which are greatly exaggerated. I propose to look at the situation from an objective point of view and debunk, or, conversely, approve some myths about the DC.
Scarcity
Recently, a magazine from the ones that are distributed to offices for free has come into the hands. There, in black and white, it was written that finding a data center in Russia to accommodate at least 15 racks is almost impossible. We arrange an experiment and send a request for several options from issuing Yandex.
Here are our lucky ones:
')
Checking a conspiracy e-mail the next morning. Received a response from all companies except E-Style Telecom. But “Oversan”, TEL Hosting, Agava and MSM are ready to host my “virtual” 15 cabinets. In my opinion, the conclusions suggest themselves. Prices for all about the same level, in the region of 50 thousand rubles per rack.
Openness
Another question concerned the opportunity to personally visit the tight area of the data center for existing and potential customers. It is always a double edged sword. On the one hand, I want to see where your equipment is located and to have the opportunity to work with it physically, if necessary. On the other hand, it is unpleasant to feel that strangers can walk quietly next to your servers. Who knows what's on their mind?
Heroes - all the same. The question of physical access to the containment area at Agave was avoided, although perhaps I received a typical response to a request for the rental of racks. The remaining data centers from our list allow customers to work with their equipment, subject to certain security measures.
In "Oversana" you must first agree on the list of employees allowed to work with the equipment. An hour before the visit is required to make an application in the ticket system. TEL Hosting allows customers to work with their equipment, but in the presence of data center specialists. MSM also provides 24x7 physical access.
Prices
The third myth concerns the high cost of domestic data center services. In fact, in general, prices in Russia and abroad are at the same level. Take, for comparison, the prices for “hosting servers” in all the same domestic data centers and using Google, we will find prices for collocation abroad.
Of course, it is more logical to compare pricing offers for server rentals, since it is unlikely that someone will take out their servers for colocation, but in the configurations of the devil’s leg they will break and an objective review will fail. Prices for the placement of 1U with a port of 100 Mbit / s in Russian and foreign data centers.
Russia“Oversan-Luna” - 2980 Rubles / monthTEL Hosting - 2300 Rubles / monthE - Style Telecom - 4838 Rubles / monthAgava - 2399 Rubles / monthMSM - 2600 Rubles / monthOverseasLeaseWeb - 49 Euro / month (1 TB included, then 10 Euros per 1 TB)Hetzne r - 39 Euro per month (5 TB included, then 6.9 Euros per 1 TB; 50 W (!) Of electricity, then 0, 2975 for 1 W)Ivelocity - $ 99 / month (500 GB included)Superb - $ 99 / month (4 TB included, then $ 95 for 1 TB)Reliable Servers - $ 149 / month ( 10 TB included )As we see, the Russian prices for “Kolo” are quite consistent with the average foreign prices. LeaseWeb and Hetzner’s “budget” tariffs hide very tight restrictions and serious hidden fees. The services of European and American data centers attract customers by “remoteness” from Russian law enforcement agencies, but they repel many other problems. There is no possibility of physical access to the equipment, language barrier, poor “ping” and, as it turns out, not such low prices.
Recently, authoritative (sort of like) publications have been actively discussing the topic of the huge prospects of the hosting market in Russia. But, in my opinion, it is obvious that the picture is not very bright. The market is already oversaturated, there is fierce competition between data centers, and soon cloud services will also start pressing. True, there is a certain hope that customers will turn their faces from Europe to Russia - the prices are already at a completely European level, and the quality, at least, is not worse.
