Ainol Novo 7 Paladin - MIPS-tablet on Android 4 ICS
The ainol company made an interesting move towards getting rid of the domination of the ARM architecture in mobile devices - it began mass production of tablets using a MIPS processor.
So, the hero of our today's review, Ainol Novo 7 Paladin
Screen: 7 inches, capacitive multitouch on 5 touches, 800 x 480
GPS: No
No camera
Bluetooth: No
WIFI: 802.11 b / g / n
HDMI: No
Battery: 4000mAh
This tablet is remarkable primarily for its price, which varies around $ 100. And of course, decent performance for the price.
')
For the sake of such a tasty price, the company decided to make the device as light as possible, which ended up left without BT, GPS, HDMI and a second USB. Well at least a slot for cards and WiFi left.
However, you can pay tribute to the engineers of the company - they did not save on the screen and the processor, having put, of course, not the perfect screen, but quite good - bright and with a capacitive sensor.
There is no Russian language in the official firmware, and there will not be - someone from the Russian market players signed an agreement with the manufacturer, so in the near future we can expect the appearance of this tablet in our stores under the brand, for example, Explay. Or DNS. :)
Packaging
PW packed the tablet in a dense cardboard box, and also wrapped the box of the tablet with a film. The box arrived practically intact:
On the reverse side of the inscription is not in Russian:
If the box is opened, then inside we will find an interesting package - a “book”, in one part of which there is a tablet, and in the other - everything else.
Packing on: 4+
Looks beautiful, you can give.
Equipment
Standard. Headphones (in a hermetically sealed bag), cable for charging (also known as USB-MiniUSB), power supply for charging, a book with ICS screenshots, Chinese warranty.
Headphones branded:
That, however, does not prevent them from being suck in quality.
The cable is absolutely standard, which can not but rejoice:
Options on: 3
Not bad and not great. As usual.
Build quality and body
The body is plastic, crunches with pressure from the sides. But not going to break. Once he fell from me about one and a half meters, but nothing fatal with the body happened. However, the desire to repeat does not appear - the case does not look quite reliable.
The design does not look like artisanal:
The fonts are even, on the back side there is a serial number, made not by paint, but by a laser, which hints about different serials for each device:
Even on the back of the lattice single speaker:
There is nothing more behind:
Build quality on: 3-
It looks normal, but rather flimsy. I did not like the constant crunching, and the gentle back cover - without a case, it will soon turn into a scratch museum.
Screen
Compared to Dropad A8X:
Separately:
In bright light it looks normal, especially at maximum brightness. The brightness on the latest firmware version may decrease to very small values, which is good news when reading a book in the dark.
Of course, I would like more permission, but it would be foolish to consider it a disadvantage.
The only thing that spoils the impression of the screen is the frame surrounding it (apparently, it is cheaper than flush glass with the case). Under it, small debris and dust that has to be cleaned is constantly clogged.
Screen on: 3+
The screen is not bad, low score solely because of the scope.
Connectors and interfaces
There is nothing on the front panel except the logo and the device name.
All plugs are concentrated on one face:
On one more only three buttons (on, back, menu):
Regarding the buttons I can not say anything bad - pressing is clear, with a clearly distinguishable (both tactile and sound) silk. The location of the buttons on the side faces brought inconvenience only for the first two days - then I remembered what was where.
The other two are as empty as a flash drive from the factory:
Only lonely visible stickers Chinese acceptance.
But back to our connectors:
So, here we have volume buttons, a reset button recessed into the case, a MiniUSB plug, a microphone hole, a microSD card slot, a headphone plug.
On which, by the way, quite a lot of bad reviews - poor contact on some headphones. But it is, by the way. Unfortunately, there is no indication of charge - you have to rely only on the indication of the system.
Buttons and buttons on: 4
Everything is in place, comfortable and beautiful.
MIPS32 processor from the company Ingenic Semiconductor. Made on 65-nm technology, it includes one core with a frequency of 1 GHz, hardware decoder 1080P video in H.264, VC-1 and VP8 formats, and the Vivante GC860 graphics core operating at 440 MHz.
The processor is very energy efficient - only 0.25 W with 100% processor and video block load (1080p decoding)
Interestingly, the processor of the same series (JZ47xx), was used in the much-loved habravchanami Video-in-Print module in Vogue and Playboy.
AnTuTu hung on the 3d test, so see the results of the Quadrant test:
I don’t know, however, how much you can trust these tests, because they are sharpened by ARM testing, not MIPS. You are not trying to compare the same test x86 and arm?
Operating system: Android 4.0.3
The latest firmware is Android 4.0.3, it comes with version 4.0.1 and 3.2. On w3bsit3-dns.com all these firmware are available (4.0.3, 4.0.1, 3.2), and for the first two full third-party Russifiers are available.
Memory: 512 MB / 8 GB
8 GB are divided into two sections - 1 GB and 6 GB, the rest, apparently, is reserved for the system. After reset, the user has 862MB + 5890MB = 6752, a little less than 7GB. And that's not counting the slot for microSD cards.
Screen: 7 inches, capacitive multitouch on 5 touches, 800 x 480
They lie. By God, they lie - two touches.
WIFI: 802.11 b / g / n
I didn’t measure the speed, but it connects very quickly - after two seconds it was already connected after switching on.
Unfortunately, the kit does not have an adapter wire for a USB plug, so I had to search.
Declared full support for modems E1820, E1782, E1750, E230, E1550, E180. Unfortunately, I have an E173, which did not want to work.
Headphones, from those that I had - earned without problems.
Weight: 325g, Dimensions: 187 x 111 x 12
And in size it is much smaller than the A8X
Including the thickness:
Features on: 4
Top iron is not about him. But it works smoothly, menus do not slow down, memory is enough - what more could you want?
Insides
We pin a plastic cap with a needle:
We unscrew 4 screws:
And neatly click off the frame with the pick:
Above is a “sandwich” from the screen and touch panel:
Raise and turn over, trying not to damage the train - it is a very clever design.
We get access to the board and the battery:
By unscrewing another screw that secures the board, you can lift and turn it over as well:
Here is the most harmful headphone plug:
If someone scratches their hands, the replacement does not present any particular difficulties.
Tricky plan loop with controller:
Disassembled:
The battery is quite large compared to the size of the device itself:
Maintainability on: 4-
Easy to disassemble and assemble.
Programs and work
A spoon of tar. Firstly, there is not 2.x, and not even 3.x. Some programs do not work well on ICS, for example, JustReader, I could not run the latest version of JustReader, it works fine.
Secondly, the modified architecture also imposes its limitations - only some applications can run on it, for others it is necessary to install MagicCode - a program that allows you to run applications written for ARM. Unfortunately, some programs can slow down and / or fail. In particular, Swype tossed over quite sluggishly, I had to return to the stock keyboard.
Also, normal applications for Root will not be able to help either, you will first need to install ClockworkMod Recovery , and then the Root_Fix package (you can get the Paladin_ROM_ROOT_Fix.zip file from here ). Russification is also easy - just follow the instructions .
W3bsit3-dns.com the user Teoret1k wrote a small list of programs and games that exactly work on the Russian firmware 4.0.3 with MagicCode.
In general, not everything is so scary. The device has attracted users, supplements are constantly being added to it, the list of applications that correctly work on ICS is constantly expanding.
Convenience of work (relative to software) on: 2+
Currently out of the box is weakly usable, but you can live with a file. The next is better.
Working hours
And here everything is fine. Continuous playback of movies from internal memory without WIFI, with maximum backlight - 7 hours (14% left):
More details:
Flat is night, very little is discharged in standby mode.
Work time on: 5
Summary:
Great tablet for your price. Cheap, with a good iron, good battery life. Yes, it requires dopilki, but nothing complicated.
