Most recently, this system was discussed in our blog. Now we would like to dwell on connecting remote regions using VSAT satellite bidirectional access technology.
Of the more than 90 thousand precinct election commissions, about 4 thousand are so difficult to access that laying cable communication lines to them is almost impossible. Such places were found in all federal districts. For their connection, the technology of bidirectional satellite Internet VSAT is used.

VSAT stands for Very Small Aperture Terminal - an earth station with a small antenna diameter, usually not exceeding 1.8 m.
The VSAT satellite network includes three main elements: the central earth station (CCD, or HUB in English terminology), a satellite relay and VSAT subscriber terminals.
The central earth station in the satellite communications network based on VSAT performs the functions of a central node and, in addition to interfacing with the land lines, provides control over the operation of the entire network. To conduct video broadcasts from polling stations, Rostelecom has already deployed two new hubs and upgraded four existing ones.
VSAT networks are built on the basis of geostationary repeater satellites. This makes it possible to simplify the design of subscriber terminals as much as possible and to supply them with simple fixed antennas without a satellite tracking system. The satellite receives the signal from the earth station, amplifies it, and sends it back to Earth, to the hub. In total, this program will involve nine satellites.
The subscriber VSAT terminal consists of two main parts: the external unit — the antenna and the transceiver — and the internal unit — the satellite modem. The outdoor unit is installed in the focus of the antenna. It transmits and receives modulated radio signals via satellite, which are then sent to the ground station. The internal block provides connection to the computer.
Equipment suppliers for this project were the largest players in the satellite communications market - Hughes and Gilat.
In conclusion, we note that the main part of satellite communication channels for connecting hard-to-reach polling stations, about 3,000, will be organized on the own resources of the Rostelecom group of companies (more precisely, a subsidiary of RTKomm.RU), the rest on the resources of alternative operators.
