Scientists have published one of the first recordings of the human voice (audio)

Scientists from the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (USA) digitized and made public one of the first recordings of a human voice. Records, which scientists decided to digitize, for more than 100 years.

In the late 1870s - the early 1880s, the Alexander Bell lab Volta Labs and Thomas Edison competed in creating effective sound recording technologies. Edison had already invented a phonograph (1877), but at the same time he was engaged in the creation of an incandescent lamp, which gave Bell a chance to improve the existing technology.

Part of the experimental recordings, in particular, made on glass disks, was donated to the Smithsonian Museum. What exactly was recorded on the disks remained unknown - because of their fragility, historians did not dare to lose them.

Recently, scientists from the Lawrence National Laboratory created a technology that allows you to play discs virtually. First, the disks are scanned in the optical range to create a full three-dimensional model.

Then, with the help of special algorithms, the model is “rejuvenated” - signs of wear and minor damage are removed. At the last stage, the calculations of the movement of the needle on the "new" disk are translated into sound.

All six discs thus recovered were recorded by Volta Labs from 1881 to 1885. The recordings, among other things, make it possible to hear the peculiarities of the language of that time.

All six recordings can be heard here .
