The potential of knitting as a medium for contemporary art is just beginning
to unfold. This week, Turkish artist Ebru Kurbak presents his project Newsknitter at the Ars Electronica festival.
Newsknitter is a combination of modern computerized knitting technologies and the content of online news feeds to produce one-of-a-kind sweaters. Using the news of the day as a data source, the software generates a variety of visual images (using news text or geometric shapes) in a format suitable for transferring to a knitting machine.

On Ars Electronica will be shown 10 sweaters produced on
TETAS Tekstil in Istanbul using Japanese knitting
Shima Seiki machines. Unfortunately, it is not yet clear whether there will be sweaters in
further sold, although a festive gift of them would have turned out
rather doubtful - rarely the news sheet is pleasant to the touch.
