BitTorrent still dominates global traffic

Analytical company Ipoque has published the latest information on the distribution of traffic on the global Internet for 2007. Preliminary results showed that the share of P2P in the load on communication channels is, depending on the time of day, from 50% (during the day) to 90% (at night). This is much more than a year ago, when the share of P2P was 30% and 70% , respectively.

Already last year, BitTorrent overtook eDonkey as the most popular P2P network, and in total these two networks control more than 95% of all P2P traffic. The share of different protocols varies greatly from country to country: for example, exotic DirectConnect (about 30%) is very popular in the Baltic states. However, BitTorrent takes the first place everywhere with an indicator of 50% -75%, whereas for eDonkey - from 5% to 50%.

The growth of P2P is explained by the fact that many popular applications of a new generation, such as Joost and Skype, are based on this platform. For example, the same Skype generates already 2% of world traffic.

Statistics for last year in Germany shows what kind of content is most popular in file-sharing networks: music (22.3%), movies (21.24%) and porn (15.04%).
