Hacker News launched an
interesting discussion on the purpose for which Google put the redirect on
Duck.com . Detractors suggest that this is a kind of Taipokvottinga against the “competitor”
DuckDuckGo.com .
DuckDuckGo.com is a hybrid search engine that has been operating since 2008, without search spam, almost without advertising, without spying on users (completely anonymous), supports hotkeys and other
cool things . In general, a kind of geek "opposition" Google, created for a tiny group of protest voters. The audience of the site last year was about
200 thousand per day , generally speaking, almost no one knows about it.
Believe that Google is using Duck.com for tayposkvottinga, whoever sees Google as a “new Microsoft” (current point of view) and assumes that “Good Corporation” is able to use its monopoly position in the market and financial resources for unfair competition. To believe in it or not is a personal matter.
But in defense of Google you need to say the following. First, the domain Duck.com
existed long before the geek search engine DuckDuckGo. Secondly, Google
got the domain in 2010 quite by accident, as part of the deal to buy On2 Technologies, the developer of video codecs TrueMotion. On the
former site On2 is an information stub with an explanation of the situation. Duck is simply the former name of the company On2 Technologies.

Only one question remains unanswered: why did Google decide to place its search on the site “duck.com” and not sell this domain to Disney or, at worst, put a redirect on the
Wikipedia article about ducks . Have they forgotten their ethical code and the slogan "don't be evil"? Or do they seriously believe that duck.com visitors really want to go to google.com?
