Western blogs dedicated to entrepreneurship and Internet startups
discuss the actions of Russian capitalists in the venture capital investment market. We are talking about Finam investment holding, which bought a stake in
Alawar Entertainment , one of the world leaders in the casual games market (
press release ).
Although Alawar is a Russian company, it operates on a foreign market, so Finam’s investments can be viewed as an expansion of Russian venture capitalists abroad. The purpose of investment is to strengthen the position of a startup, after which it is profitable to resell its share, most likely, to a foreign investor.
In the coming years, Alawar plans to enter the top five of the world's largest casual games publishers. To achieve this goal, the policy is to acquire core assets. Only in the last year, two internal development studios have appeared in the structure of the company - Alawar DreamDale and Alawar Stargaze, created on the basis of purchased companies-developers of casual games. The funds received as a result of the deal with Finam will be used to open new development studios and create high-quality gaming products for the Western and Russian markets. In addition, investments will be made to improve the internal technology of digital distribution of games (affiliate program) and the introduction of in-game advertising to Alawar products.
The volume of the global casual games market in 2006 was $ 950 million. According to DFC Intelligence, by 2008 this figure will exceed the bar of $ 1.5 billion, while the turnover of the North American market will be about $ 690 million. In Russia, the casual games segment originated three years ago . In 2006, its turnover was about $ 1.5 million, in 2007 it is expected to increase to $ 8-10 million, with a subsequent growth rate of 200-300% per year.

“Alawar is one of the most attractive companies in the Russian gaming industry. High quality management, the availability of an effective strategy, an excellent development team create all the prerequisites for maintaining the leading position in our country and becoming one of the world leaders in the casual games segment. Of course, this will require additional resources. In this regard, we do not rule out attracting a foreign strategic or financial investor to the company's shareholders, ”
says Alexey Basov, director of the IT investment department at Finam investment holding and board member of Alawar Entertainment.
