As we remember, on June 8, 2011, World IPv6 Day took place - a global event to test infrastructure readiness for the transition to IPv6. All participants of the action from 00:00 to 23:59 on the specified day provided access both via IPv4 and IPv6. A number of Russian companies, including Yandex, Rambler, Masterhost and Reg.ru, also took part in the event.
IPv6 testing has been recognized as successful, and on June 6, 2012,
World IPv6 Launch will be held - launching IPv6
on an ongoing basis . This time no testing, everything is serious. Each group of participants has taken on certain obligations.
- Internet service providers will enable IPv6 for at least 1% of their users (AT & T, Comcast, Free Telecom, Internode, KDDI, Time Warner Cable, XS4ALL have already subscribed).
- Network equipment manufacturers activate IPv6 as default settings in routers (Cisco, D-Link).
- Web companies will include IPv6 on their main sites (Google, Facebook, Microsoft Bing, Yahoo), and some also transfer corporate networks to IPv6.
The transition to IPv6 with an address space of
2,128 is required due to the exhaustion of the stock of free addresses in the IPv4 space (2
32 ). The latest IPv4 address blocks were distributed to regional registrars on February 1, 2011.
