Gigabyte instead of a dollar. Traffic will become a new world currency?

The throughput microlimits on the main communication channels can become the settlement units in e-commerce. In stores we will be able to buy food, giving megabytes and gigabytes of their traffic. For example, a loaf of bread - two gigabytes, milk - three gigabytes, plus a courier to the house per gigabyte. Salary can also be issued in petabytes. This original payment system based on torrents and P2P was developed by scientists from the Netherlands and the USA ( detailed description ).

Scientists believe that video will become the main consumer of traffic in the future. It will be so demanding on the band that in the P2P system, communication channels will constantly not be enough, so you will need to develop an effective system of resource allocation and allocation of quotas to each user. Outgoing traffic will become a real value.

For installation on client computers, scientists have released a universal program Tribler, based on the protocol BitTorrent. According to the logic of its action, it resembles a torrent tracker, which counts incoming and outgoing traffic. Only here there is no centralized tracker, and all calculations occur in a global distributed system, as well as possible settlements between users. It is simply an ideal platform for a global global payment system, although it requires changes in some financial mechanisms, such as money issuance by national banks (telecoms), inflation regulation, etc.

Scientists have developed a two-part system of micro and macro levels with an integrated payment security mechanism. To the standard BitTorrent protocol, they added a robust identification system using the Elliptic Curve Cryptography protocol ( Python code ). Over it, the peer-to-peer exchange protocol of “levels of altruism” called BarterCast ( Python code ) works. The level of altruism is calculated as the proportion between incoming and outgoing traffic for each user.

Not everyone likes the idea of ​​using traffic for global settlements. Critics remind that this memorable corporation Enron tried to implement this utopia, which turned out to be one of the biggest frauds in the history of mankind. At least for this reason alone, “gigabytes-dollars” should be treated with caution.
