Why SOPA is Useless

Suppose that greed has prevailed over common sense, and it has become impossible (very difficult) to download content for free on the Internet.

How much will the copywriting make? Not at all. The model of content consumption for money is radically different from content consumption for free.

If the content is free, it is consumed as much as they want. I wanted to watch a movie - I looked. Wanted to listen to music - listened.
')
If the content is paid, then it is consumed _in the budget allocated to entertainment_. How much I am willing to spend a month - so much and spend. From the fact that free content will end, my budget does not grow. My salary will not increase. Most likely, I will look towards an alternative, cheaper content.

How many providers will lose? Let's estimate. In Russia, 20 million households are connected to the Internet at an average cost of connection of 500 rubles / month, which makes about $ 4 billion a year. For this money, users get ~ 2.5 megabits (on average in Russia). Why do we need 2.5 megabits, if you can not download anything? Watch videos on YouTube? Yes, there are more than 500 kb ads only (see adterrasperaspera.com/blog/2010/05/24/approximate-youtube-bitrates ). Skype is also no more megabit. I didn’t see VPN at a speed greater than megabit, and I’m not going to mention about i2p.

Most regional providers have long-term "tariff-free" tariffs, for example, www.is74.ru/home/internet/tariffs/surfer - only for surfing. It can be expected that most of the new connections will be made exactly at these tariffs + a significant part of existing users will switch to them. Prices, please note, 3-5 times lower than the average price level tariffs.

Total, if, say, 20% of consumers instead of the tariff for 500 rubles take the tariff for 150 rubles, the loss of providers will be more than 500 million dollars. For comparison, the volume of sales of legal content on media in the Russian Federation is about $ 1 billion.

Yes, it should be noted that the disappearance of freebies from the Internet will hit, first of all, the development of the Internet in remote regions, where leased are very expensive. There is no sense to take the cheapest fare disappear completely.

So SOPA is a classic lose-lose. Everything loses: consumers, hosters, providers and the copyists themselves. It is a pity that the latter do not have enough brain to realize this.
