When the Android OS appeared, not many people believed that this mobile platform would become popular. There were more skeptics who thought that if Android did not die soon, it would become a niche mobile operating system. Actually, skeptics said the same when the Google browser appeared. But Android has become an extremely popular operating system, and this proves not only the number of mobile devices based on this OS, but also that the number of applications in the Android Market has already exceeded 400 thousand.
At the same time, according to Distimo analytical company, most of the applications in the Market are free, which the owners of Android OS devices cannot but dislike. About 68% of all applications available in the Market are free, and this is an excellent indicator. By the way, only in April 2011, the same indicator was 60%, so the percentage of free programs in the Market continues to grow.

Interestingly, the milestone of 300 thousand applications was overcome in September 2011. And yes, the applications themselves are much more, the company counted only those programs that are downloaded by users, and not hang dead weight, so to speak. Of course, many applications were simply removed from the Market, since some programs do not meet the requirements of the Android Market.
According to the same company Distimo, and according to other companies, now the number of applications in the Android Market is growing faster than the number of applications in the App Store. However, the latter still surpasses the Android Market in the number of available applications. But the change of leader is not far off, because in the App Store 400 thousand applications were in June 2011, i.e. only about six months ago.
