The Wikimedia Foundation announced the completion of an annual fundraising campaign. According to the representative of the Jay Walsh Foundation, during it was collected 20 million dollars from more than one million people from almost every country in the world.
The past campaign has been the most successful for the Wikimedia Foundation since 2003, continuing the continuous band of annual records. You can think of banners with Jimbo and other people terrible, but this model really works.
The number of donors to the fund has increased tenfold since 2008, and the total dollar amount raised increased to more than $ 20 million from $ 4.5 million.
Fund executive director Sue Gardner said:
Our model works fantastically well.
Ordinary people use Wikipedia, they like it, so they give her some money so that she continues to thrive. This supports our independence and allows us to focus exclusively on providing a useful public service. I am very grateful to our donors for making this possible. I promise that we will use their money carefully and wisely.
According to Jay Walsh, the funds raised will be used to purchase and install servers and other equipment, develop new site functionality, expand mobile services, provide legal protection for projects, and also support a large global community of Wikimedia volunteers.

The total planned expenditures of the Wikimedia Foundation for the 2011–12 financial year are $ 28.3 million. The bulk of the required amount was collected during the campaign, and the remainder is collected during the year thanks to grants from various institutions (such as the Sloan Foundation) and many other small donations.
Wikipedia contains more than 20 million articles in 282 languages, making it the largest encyclopedia in human history. More than one hundred thousand volunteers are working on Wikipedia and ten related projects. January 15 Wikipedia will celebrate its 11th anniversary.
