German police sent 440 thousand hidden SMS to spy on citizens

At the recent Chaos Communication Congress conference (December 27-30), well-known GSM network security expert Karsten Nohl from Security Research Labs presented a curious presentation of "Defending mobile phones" devoted to methods of intercepting data in GSM networks, and also ways to detect and protect against such actions by the user.

Recall that it was Karsten Nol who in 2009 publicly demonstrated the method of hacking the 64-bit A5 / 1 algorithm, which is used in all GSM mobile communication systems, and also published full information on this case. In 2010, he showed a ready end-to-end solution for GSM wiretapping using a $ 15 phone and the Osmocom open source program.

Now Carsten Nohl didn’t surprise us with anything revolutionary, but simply described in detail what specific methods for fraud and surveillance are currently used by representatives of the criminal world and law enforcement agencies. For example, the German authorities have been using fake GSM base stations since 2006 to “ping” phones whose owners are being monitored. In 2010 alone, three law enforcement agencies in Germany sent out 440,783 “hidden” SMS messages. For incomplete 2011 (the federal report contains numbers until October 31, 2011) - a little less.

If you are interested in this topic, watch the entire video of the presentation of Karsten Nol (57 minutes), it is really worth it.
