Google Hard Drive Damage Statistics Published

A few months ago, a very interesting document was presented at the USENIX technical conference with detailed statistics on how and why Google drives hard drives. Many have already seen this interesting report, and for the rest we publish the most interesting of the document ( original in PDF ).

To begin with - the dependence of AFR (the number of disks that have failed in a year) on the age of the disks.

Naturally, the probability of HDD breakage is strongly dependent on the intensity of disk usage (weak, medium, high). This dependence is especially evident in the first months of the “life” of the hard drive and in old age (five years or more).

The probability of a hard disk crash increases if it is operated at a temperature below 35 ° C, and especially below 25 ° C. Oddly enough, the ideal temperature for a hard drive is from 35 ° C to 45 ° C.

The SMART error detection system reports about half of all future failures, but many drives break without warning. After the appearance of the first error, the probability of a disk surviving for six months is about 75%.
