Initially it was thought that there is one species, called Ophiocordyceps unilateral, in fact there are 4 types of fungi, each of which can “control the mind” of ants - scientists announced on Wednesday.

Fungi can infect ants, seize their brains, and then kill an insect as soon as it reaches the place ideal for the growth of fungi and the spread of spores.

All 4 known species of fungi live in tropical forests in Brazil, which are changing rapidly due to climate and forest destruction, said study leader David Hughes, an entomologist at Penn State University.

Hags and colleagues made the discovery after they noticed the wide spread of fungi in which ants victims are involved.

“There is a suspicion that each type of fungus is better suited to attacking a certain type of ant,” says Hags.

“This potentially means that thousands of zombie fungus species have yet to be discovered in tropical forests around the world,” said the researcher.
