Thoughts about karma - how to support newbies and create a good community.

A lot has already been written about karma, there have been many disputes and various ideas. Topics like this were and will appear. I want to offer several agreements that will help improve Habr.

First you need to understand why karma is needed. If you believe Habraviki, Karma is designed to support the desire for growth on the site. Now, in fact, Karma has a dual purpose - to encourage beneficial members of the community and “plug up” those who are not needed by the community. And the second is in no way connected with the “despotism of the majority” or “elitism”, which the web 2.0 communities like to blame. This is an elementary filter from trolls and other personalities who initially have a destructive orientation in their activities. But:
1. Such personalities, as a rule, are not so many.
2. Habraspolyzami very quickly cope with them.
That is, if somewhere a troll, plus one or any other “undesirable element” appears - the karma of such a person will instantly go into a minus. Hub users are not indifferent, and this is good.

Further in habraviki there is a certain "price list":
publish a new habratopic in a collective blog - karma ≥1 (but, by the way, you can write to the “I'm Smart” blog with karma> −5);
vote for habratopic or comment - karma ≥2;
increase / decrease the karma of another user - karma> 5;
Comment without limit “1 comment per 5 minutes” - karma> 0.

I identified four key actions for the habrauser. This shows that a person with zero karma is extremely constrained in opportunities. The opportunity to be useful, he acquires with a karma equal to ≥2 - such a user can create and vote for content. In fact, we have the majority of users with karma <2 and novices with karma 0, which the community cannot use in any way. It suits many of them and they just read the articles, sometimes inserting their comments.
')
Of course, not everyone who has a karma ≥2 will write, but someone will vote. In other words, there will be more people who do something useful for the community.

But in order for such happiness to come, you must first establish some simple agreements.
1. "Entry level"
Why not raise newbies to a level of karma so that they can vote for topics? You should also be more tolerant of requests to raise karma - raise to the “initial level” or at least ignore such requests and not minus. Do you think such loyalty only hurts? I think not because
2. “We always have time to bury”
As I said, habra users do not remain indifferent to any violations. And even if the newcomer, to whom they have given karma, does not behave in the best way - they will say goodbye to him without any regrets as soon as possible.

In other words, I do not think that a more loyal attitude towards karma will harm the community, but it can be very beneficial.
What do you think?
