Volkswagen prohibits emails after hours

According to employees' complaints that receiving email violates their peace, Volkswagen decided to change the settings of Blackberry servers for employees who receive mail on Blackberry smartphones. The ban begins to operate 30 minutes after the end of the working day (that is, at 18:15), and ceases to act 30 minutes before it starts (at 7:00). The ban does not apply to voice traffic, and does not apply to senior management.

Of course, employee productivity will fall - many are accustomed to working in their free time, for example, checking mail in the train on the way to work, or at home, although these hours are not paid by the employer . On the other hand, Volkswagen did very prudently, because due to the involvement of its employees in around-the-clock employment, the company may be subjected to pressure from trade unions and relevant labor protection committees.

The position of the trade unions is as follows: even if the employees themselves want to read mail 24 hours a day, the employer must prohibit such workaholism, because free use of employees in this form is unacceptable.

It can be assumed that other European companies will follow the example of VW. Some people reach the extreme and refuse to use email altogether, promoting more effective communication through wikis and professional social networks. Since 2014, one of the largest IT companies in the world, Atos (78,500 employees in 42 countries) has adopted a plan for a total rejection of email .
