Google seriously wants to buy 700 MHz spectrum
Google President Eric Schmidt confirmed that the company is “likely” to participate in the auction for licensing the 700 MHz spectrum. Earlier, there was information that Google is ready to spend at least $ 4.6 billion for these purposes and buy back part of the frequency range. It’s no secret that Google needs a license to broadcast in this part of the spectrum to deploy a free wireless network throughout the United States.
The FCC said in advance that at least a third of the spectrum in this range should be used to organize an open national data network to which any device or program could connect. Whoever becomes the buyer of this spectrum, he is obliged to build such a network. Mobile operators AT & T and Verizon have already protested that such auction conditions give Google a clear advantage.
