Wikipedia votes to temporarily disable the site in protest against SOPA

Registered users (editors) of Wikipedia are discussing a strike in protest against the SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) bill, which is now being considered in the US House of Representatives. It is proposed to completely or partially disable Wikipedia for a while.

The idea was introduced for voting on December 10 by Jimmy Wales himself (in the photo) from his user page.

The authors of this initiative resemble a successful example of Italian Wikipedia. A few months ago, they turned off the national version of the site for a short time - and this had a huge effect. The Italian Parliament immediately capitulated and refused to accept draconian laws. The American SOPA bill is much worse than the Italian, and turning off the fifth most visited website on the Internet will most certainly attract the attention of a wide audience and the legislators themselves.

Each voter can express his position with arguments. The discussion is ongoing. So far, most editors are inclined to support the strike. Although there are opponents who believe that the strike against SOPA is contrary to the principle of political neutrality, which is one of the basic principles of the work of Wikipedia.

"Blackout" is possible in a limited version, that is, there will be a disconnection of the American segment - blocking by IP, or the English version of en.wikipedia.org.

Alternative ideas are also discussed: switching to a black background, creating an additional wiki project, banner advertising with an appeal to users.
