New life of old radio. Part 2: linux?

I refused to make a radio dock out of radio . I decided to collect the PC after all. I hasten to disappoint you, but this is again an unfinished worklog. I want to consult first.

But first, a little about what happened at the moment. Inside only standard accessories. Motherboard mATX, Sempron 3Ghz, 1Gb RAM, GF7600GS, 250Gb HDD + 320GB temporarily there too. The PCI network card also temporarily lives there (the built-in has not yet made friends with Linux). On the cover with an adhesive tape, an IR receiver is ugly attached. This is temporary. Just not my receiver.
')

As you noticed here there is not enough DVD-drive (I grabbed it for a while with this terrible IDE cable). It is problematic to insert the usual one - the processor cooler interferes. I think insert external ( there are quite compact ).

All my work was to cut the extra partitions. The only difficulty was to push the USB ports into the switches in the front (2 right). Turns on the radio, as expected, the red button. The “tuning” knob temporarily operates with the 8mm power button. fan located behind vidyuhi. One day she will turn into a fanbas. Unfortunately, one of the front "krutilok" was not, but I think to insert a microphone input. I didn’t have a camera when I was doing radio work, so I can’t show my working moments :-(

All the iron fell very well. True, I had to change vidyuhi (mine had a huge radiator).

Behind the scary. But do not forget that this is still a beta version.

I, of course, understand that USB extenders instead of a normal system, when the front connectors are plugged into the motherboard, this is not a problem, but my hands do not reach the remake yet. :-)

Elements of the Soviet designer, I'm going to replace something more aesthetic. They are needed here because I had to remove the standard mount, where both parts of the radiogram are fastened with screws.

With the temperature inside everything is normal. The screws do not heat above 40 degrees, the percent is not higher than 55, and the additional fan should be turned on only during games.

With noise more difficult. In general, it is not very noisy, but after the Mac Mini is still noticeable. The loudest component turned out to be ... a screw! Against this background, the CPU Thermaltake TR2-R1 for 300 rubles is almost inaudible. I hope with the replacement of the screw (and it is time already) this problem will be solved. And to solve other problems, I need your help.

Three problems:
1. I was going to cram a column there. There are still small notebooks . They fit right there. Is it worth doing? Will there be pickups? How well do they sound? Maybe it's better to get by outside?

2. What would put the screw, so that was quieter? At 5000 turnover I think I can not find too.

3. The most serious problem is software. While I look in the direction of mythTV (especially since the recent acquaintance with Linux turned out to be more than positive, not only for me, but also for a couple of my friends), but it doesn’t impress me externally (I want something a la AppleTV) , and I have absolutely no idea what you can play with gempad under Linux (sometimes you want to play). And further. Is there any software for setting up the remote control (defined in Windows as a HID-compatible device), a la Windows HIP?

In general, I will be glad to any links to interesting sites / articles about Linux. Except LOR nothing special and I do not know.

Something like that. I wrote this article while I was terribly tired, so don’t kick much, but I wouldn't be writing another month. I plan to finish this miracle only after moving to a new apartment, where I want to somehow enter the radiolaire into the interior. So its appearance, I do not see it yet. And in general, I don’t do it yet, since all my free time is spent on learning Linux. :-)

I really hope for your good advice.

PS: Radeole needs a suitable TV set. Of course, some “Horizon” would look cool, but still I want a 32 "LCD HD-Ready. Can you advise anything to fit the style?

PPS: Sometimes there is a desire to paint it black and try to make it glossy. On the one hand, it will look cool, on the other hand, can it retain its “natural beauty”?
